Causes of burning throat

One of the issues that can go wrong with the throat is burning therein. It may not raise your hackles; however, this condition leads to much discomfort.

Since the throat plays a role in breathing and eating, discomfort also accompanies these essential processes.

There are various reasons for getting a burning sensation in the throat, and the treatment varies accordingly then.

Burning mouth syndrome

BMS refers to a perpetual burning feeling in the tongue, lips, gums, and other regions in the mouth and throat. The burning may either be light or even severe as well.

The causes for burning mouth syndrome are still not known, therefore, it is harder for people to understand the problem. The process of diagnosis and treatment is also a tedious one.

Esophagitis

Esophagitis is the inflammation of the esophagus. It often results from GERD; the acid from the stomach leads to burning in the throat alongside the pain. However, there are other causes of esophagitis as well, that include allergies, ingestion of chemicals as well as radiation therapy.

Gastroesophageal acid reflex

Also known as GERD and acid reflux, this condition occurs when the acid from the stomach flows back up into the esophagus. Since the stomach acid is strong, it causes a burning sensation in the region.

At times, the acid can travel even further up, into the throat and the larynx, leading to a condition known as laryngopharyngeal reflux or LPR. People suffering from this condition also have a chronic cough, irritation in the throat, swallowing problems, issues with throat clearing, etc.

People suffering from GERD need to make lifestyle changes. Their diet also needs to be modified accordingly. Some also might need medication to help them with the symptoms of the condition. All this treatment then contributes towards remedying burning throat as well.

Infection

The burning in the throat may also be because of an infection in the throat. Alongside burning, these infections also then lead to cough, sore throat, itchy throat, etc. The infection may either be due to viruses or bacteria.

The infections may be caused by either viruses or bacteria. The former has no treatment as such, one mostly has to wait it out. In case of a bacterial infection, one might need antibiotics.

Hence, when suspecting an infection, you should not try to treat it yourself, but instead, visit a doctor for they can determine the cause and manage the problem accordingly.

Postnasal drip

Also known as upper airway cough syndrome, this condition occurs when the mucus and similar fluid drain into the throat from the sinuses. The drip then not only leads to irritation, but it also then causes a burning sensation as well. Other symptoms of postnasal drip include bad breath, congestion, runny nose, etc.

There are many reasons for postnasal drip. From allergies to infections, the causes are aplenty.

Strep throat

Strep throat is a throat infection that leads to a wide range of symptoms that include fever and subsequent aches around the body, nausea, red and swollen tonsils, and the appearance of a rash.

Since it is a bacterial infection, you might need antibiotics. However, you must consult your doctor for that, rather than self-medicating.

Mononucleosis

Mononucleosis is a viral infection. It is also known as mono in the vernacular. Due to the infection, one experiences fever and body ache alongside the burning sensation in the throat.

Other symptoms of mononucleosis include fatigue, the appearance of rash as well as swelling in the neck and armpits.
